Part of the larger issues around growth in population. Often unable to offer services to attract / keep populations. Urban areas feel rural areas are over represented in politics. Feel they pay more into tax pool, should get more. Several of causes of urbanization out of control of municipalities. Have made changes to cmhc rules to combat increasing housing prices. Now looking at 300 000 immigrants per year nationally. Federal gov"t largest driving factor in increase of globalization. Provincial governments now playing role in this as well. Private interests purchase land with the expectation of its future use/need. For the extension of public services municipalities must purchase land as well. Pushes the cost of housing beyond reach of many canadians. Buying up properties on expectation that it will increase in value. Has been countered by foreign buyer land transfer taxes (bc, ontario) Other possible outcomes of increased population and urban growth. Rapid stransmission of goods, information, people and capital.
