Race should be central to the study of ir, but it remains and is historically overlooked. There have been many contemporary proxies for race: culture, developing world, islam. Race matters little because actors/identifies other than state carry little weight. Liberalism - tendency to see ind. (and equal) actors ad fundamental. Role for states, but also international cooperative org. Marxism - sees class as the central line of analysis. Some neo-marxist writers and dependancy theory writers have considered implications of race. Early ir - imperial administration as key unit of analysis in ir. Race was and remains central in imperial projects. Du bois" analysis was often ignored, despite its publication in foreign affairs. The hierarchal adjudication of human competencies through the categorization of group attributes, wherein groups are delineated by some kind of shared heritage that is deemed visually identifiable .
