It"s conceivable that god can separate mind&body: weak since we"d be appealing to divine force whose powers are incomprehensible. I can c/d understand 1 thing w/out another & therefore can be certain that that thing is distinct from the other. I can c/d perceive that the mind is distinct from the body. I c/d perceive that the mind is a thinking thing & there"s no aspect of it which is extended. Since c/d perceptions must be true, it must be true that the mind is distinct from the body (61-62) If such modes of an attribute cant exist in a thinking subst then they must exist in some other subst (def of substance, attribute & mode) Descartes then reviews how such images appear to him & recognizes that there is a passive dimension to sensing. Since there"s smth passive abt sensing, this entails there"s something causally active. I sense colour, shape, feel heat of coffee, taste coffee (ugh its burnt!).
