Bias: the results of the sample are not a proper representative of the population. If we go about sampling the wrong way, we may end up with bias. There are 3 subcategories of bias that can occur: sampling bias, nonresponse bias, response bias. Sampling bias: the technique used to obtain the sample"s individuals tend to favor one part of the population over another. Eg: a student in a first year course surveying peers in their class about what they think about lowering the legal age for purchasing alcohol. Undercoverage: the proportion of one segment of the population is lower in a sample than it is in a population. Eg: if the survey"s interest was: should a new gelato place be built downtown? and the majority of your sample is italian. Nonresponse bias: people who are part of the sample and don"t respond have different opinions than the people who do respond.
