Listening in esl class is often primarily an aid to other aspects of language learning. Warm up: brainstorm things to get at supermarket. While listening: listen to convo of people going shopping. Ask student wo write down what they"re buying. This exercise introduces grammar point of quantifiers. Later they read the transcript and underline words used to count items they buy. 1 onion, a carton of milk, 3 bananas, a jar of jam . Friend tells you story about horrible vacation, you listen with interest and interject at points to express sympathy. Figuring out details is not the point. Important to understand general idea so can respond appropriately. We can predict a little bit as we can imagine context. Friend invites you to a party and you ask for directions, you listen carefully and make notes. Must listen to all pieces before understanding the full picture. Ask class what they know about organic and gm foods.
