LING 3Q91 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Emor, Sled, Psycholinguistics
Document Summary
Ea didn"t set out to predict errors but to discover and describe different kinds of errors. Ea wanted to understand better how learners process second lang data. Learners language is viewed as a system in its own right, in this approach. Not just an inaccurate version of the tl to be stigmatized. Learner lang is a system in a state of constant flux not fixed. Adjustments are made to accommodate new language input (stay with system a until we receive contrary info) Existing hypotheses about the target language are tested and reformulated. Language learning in this view is a process of gradual approximation to the system used by native speakers of the target language. These successive gradual approximations are known as a learner"s interlanguage. The language the learner produces differs from both the l1 and the target language. Every learner"s interlanguage is likely to be different.
