We discussed the role of culture in language learning. We raised awareness of the dangers of stereotyping as well as the potential usefulness of generalizations in categorizing experience. We examined linguistic imperialism" in connection with the spread of english and saw how the teaching of english is not value-neutral. We decided that language issues and attitudes to language in any society are very complex and need careful study. When learning another language culture shock is almost inevitable in the l2 environment but is something which can be overcome: the longer you"re in the country, the more you appreciate the culture and less culture shock.
