Asking the child to construct a story: self generated personal factual. Opening the gate up to help the child: retell. Asking the child to retell the story/short film. When the clinician hears the story, he/she gives neutral responses (ie. uh huh) It"s okay to prompt the child to add more ie. tell me more, tell me your best etc. Narrative levels (applebee 1978): 2-5 year olds: overall organization of the story. Children uses two strategies to organize their stories: centering- least sophisticated. Linking similar things together; may put the in temporal sequence. Linking things together because they are similar: chaining; more sophisticated. Events lead directly from one to another. Cause and effect relationships: younger children at the age of 2 primarily using centering, half of the kids use both as they get older, at the age of 5, the majority would use centering and chaining. Narrative levels: heaps: dogs wag their talls and bark.
