Ling 3p90 lecture 3: informal methods of assessing children"s language. A standardized test just gives you a picture into what they know (don"t give you enough info) Don"t tell you what a kid is doing spontaneously. Much more challenging to do an informal assessment (bc you really have to know what you"re looking for) Criterion-referenced procedures (just have to pass certain level of competence, like drivers test) Compare child"s performance to past performance and/or describe performance. Can child achieve a certain level of performance? (expect a certain % of success) Used to set goals and evaluate progress (kids with special needs have individualized education plans) Individualized (to what the kid is lacking in ex. verb tenses) Clinician-designed (vs. commercial) bc there are no tests for things like sign language. Few formal tests for children < 3 years that are reliable (bc there is a lot of variability and change at young age)
