We infer comprehension based on behaviour (i. e if child behaves as told we assume they understand what was said) But children can look like they comprehend when they may not. Ex if they told to make baby doll feed mommy doll they may make mommy doll feed baby doll cuz that"s what usually happens. Once they know word order they use first thing as subject and second as object. Trouble with the passive sentences like the baby was fed by the mommy .
