May be because they only hear the word in that context ex duck to refer to rubber duck at bath time but doesn"t understand word duck to refer to actual bird in park. Risk taking children willing to jump into talking with minimally understanding of the words they"re using and use words in different context. Social children use any language means they have to interact with people. Specific nominal (unique to speaker and their relationships; ex mommy, fluffy name of cat) Action words ( verbs like go, want, eat) Grammatical function words (is, a, the, that etc) Underextension and overextension (broad uses of words like calling all animals dog)
