Document Summary

Each is an integral multiple of the lowest frequency of the pattern. Fundamental frequency (f0)- lowest frequency of sound in pattern. Harmonics- all the frequencies above fo, whole number multiples of fo. So if fo is 100hz, the remaining harmonics would be 200, 300 etc. Whole string vibrates at 100 hz fo. Each half of the string vibrates at 200 hz. Gives us a complex vibration pattern therefore its not a pure tone. Mathematical procedure that identifies the harmonics in a complex sound. Converts a periodic amplitude by time waveform into a frequency waveform (spectrum-identfies each harmonic) Allows us to see each of the sinusoidal components that are summed together. Used to determine frequency and period of a wave. Tells us if sound is periodic or aperiodic. Compression is always the positive peak and rarefraction is the negative peak. Amplitude reflects amount of acoustic energy of each harmonic within the sound.
