Cnx (vagus) + cnxi (accessory: laryngeal, pharyngeal and velopharyngeal muscles. Extrinsic tongue muscles: genioglossus muscle, hyoglossus muscle, styloglossus muscle, geniohyoid muscle (c1 fibres carried by xii) Posterior 1/3 of tongue: visceral sensation. 1: oral stage (poor lip seal, poor tongue control) Transport phase: pharyngeal stage (takes about one second) Delayed or absent pharyngeal swallow: esophageal stage. Aspiration= food entered airway and passed the vocal folds. Palpate client"s neck during swallows (touch the mylohyoid, hyoid, thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage: can"t tell if they"ve aspirated unless they cough, > 40% neurologic disorders= silent aspiration (no cough reflex)
