It is just the way we have been accustomed to speak: canadians identity tag- eh! Features which clearly distinguish 2 dialects: omission of the verb be, distinct meanings of be, multiple negation, consonant cluster simplification. John, 18, lives in st. catharines: works as an apprentice in gm, got job through uncle bob and has cousin mike who lives there too, they live on same street business, usually have a beer together. They also run a dj business with two friends, jo and gerry: several nights a week they travel to different venues. Fundamental belief held by linguists: all languages varieties equal, no significant difference in complexity of their linguistic structure, all have resources for creating new vocabulary as needed. Defecit model: ethnic minorities experience chronic school failure because they are cognitively deficit and culturally deprived. Difference model: ethnic minorities don"t have a defecit but socialized into different sets of cultural norms that are not recognized or legitimized by mainstream schools.
