INTC 1F90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Pragmatics, Guacamole, Canidae
Document Summary
Regardless of how cultures determine the symbol/object relationship, all languages use regular constructs of sound to relay the meaningfulness of that symbol example t-r-u-ck. Morpheme: units of meaning- word roots and the modifying units that differentiate meanings upon those bases. Dog is a particular unit of meaning: a canid animal. Semantics is the study of the meaning of the words which result from the usable combination of morphemes. Wolf: connotatively, a fierce animal that incites fear without even necessarily threatning to harm. The visceral experience expressed in words connotative meanings problematics intercultural communication because thiss specific meaning if often not available to the non-native speaker. In many cases, connotative meaning is hard to predict. Syntax describes the logical structure of a language- how words are combined to express complex thought. In english, the order of words has meaning: Not never=positive (cid:498)) wont (cid:523)will not(cid:524) never play baseball would logically mean that the speasker will at some time pay baseball.
