HLSC 3P97 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Minimum Inhibitory Concentration, Candida Albicans, Irritant Diaper Dermatitis
Document Summary
Candida vaginitis --> 75% of women in their lifetime. Mucocutaneous - able to penetrate mucous membranes and anything outside. Mycotic disease of keratinized tissues: hair, skin, nails. Causative agent of pneumonia in immune suppresses patients. Major threat in hiv/aids in the developing world. Immunocompromised patients untreated disease = loss of lung function/death. Fungistatic - azoles - inhibit growth of the fungi. Kills fungal infections, but is very hard on the kidney. Taken up by fungal membranes, but also our membranes. Lowest concentration of drug that inhibits the growth of the fungus. Where do we expect to see fungal growth. Where do we expect to stop seeing fungal growth. Permissive --> allow parasite to dwell and carry out at least aprt of life cycle using us. Definitive: the host that give parasite life cycle. Accidental: pick up parasite, who is not usually claimed by that parasite.
