HLSC 3P97 Lecture 3: HLSC 3P97 - JAN. 24TH
Document Summary
Cell specialization is redundantly specialized - more than one cell can fight against a type of antigen. Recognize foreignness by realizing that it doesn"t have self. Helper t cells are the quarterbacks, directing the events of immunity. Main defender against parasites, but in the absence of parasites - mast cells are capable of driving the inflammatory response. Inflammatory response that is allergic in nature is caused by mast cells. Ex. in an asthma attack, mast cells are being activated and inappropriately responding. Phagocytic cells; responsible for engulfing and destroying pathogens. Complement - series of blood proteins that become activated when infection occurs. Circulate in the blood and go unnoticed, but as soon as they"re a threat, the first protein becomes activated, activating the second protein which becomes active, starting a cascade. Mode of transmission - very contagious, spread by coughing. How does the immune system start working: tb bacteria are inhaled. Enters the airway which is lined with immunocompetent cells.
