Lecture 12 & 13 diabetes and dyslipidemia. Type ii diabetes is a disease in which your pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or your body does not properly use the insulin it makes. If you have type ii diabetes, glucose builds up in your blood instead of being used for energy. Heart diseases and stroke are the number 1 cause of death and disability among people with type 2 diabetes. In fact, at least 65% of people with diabetes die from some form of heart disease or stroke. Adults with diabetes are 2 to 4x more likely to have heart disease or a stroke than adults without diabetes. The american heart association considers diabetes to be one of the seven major controllable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. High blood pressure has long been recognized as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Positive association between hypertension and insulin resistance.
