HLSC 2P92 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Fetus, Umbilical Cord, Nutrient Density
Document Summary
All individuals require the same nutrients; they just require them in different amounts at different stages of their life. There are nutrition related instances and situations that can influence the outcome of a successful pregnancy. Strongly correlate to fetal growth and health. Increased risk of diabetes, impaired development and mortality. Must increase weight prior to as well as during pregnancy! Must decrease weight before, not during pregnancy. Physical activity benefits the individual at any given time. Need to be or become more physically active before pregnancy. Dietary requirements should reflect amount of physical activity. Need to begin pregnancy at an even keel . Malnutrition (deficit) will affect both mother and fetus. During pregnancy, must target specific nutrients in which deficiency is highly related to fetal health risk, particularly folate! Placental development (occurs at approximately 4 weeks) Increased risk of environmental influence on fetal development during this time. At approximately week 4, begin to see signs of placental formation.
