61 views20 pages

Document Summary

Functions: transport nutrients, o2, co2, enzymes, hormones, ions, metabolic waste, leukocytes, stabilization of body temperature, prevention of the loss of body fluids via the clotting process after a cut, stabilization of ph and electrolyte balance. Blood represents 8% of total body weight. Average volume males: 4-6 litres females: 4-5l. Transport: gas, food, waste products, buffer, heat. *proteins on the surface of rbc determine blood types, called glycosylation because you have carbons bound. *proteins coming off the surface are known as surface antigens. Rbc with type a surface antigens and plasma with anti-b antibodies. Rbc with type b surface antigen and plasma with anti-a antibodies. Rbc with both type a and b surface antigens and neither anti-a nor anti-b plasma antibodies. Rbc with neither type a nor type b surface antigen but both anti-a and anti-b plasma antibodies. No agglutination, because the anti-b antibodies do not combine with the type a antigens.
