HLSC 1F90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: The Strongest, Sympathetic Nervous System, Parasympathetic Nervous System
Document Summary
Stress: an externally imposed factor that makes demands on the individual"s mind or body; the mental and physical responses of the mind and body to these demands. The individual"s own thought and perceptions determine whether a demand/situation/event is stressful. The same a demand/situation/ event may evoke different levels of stress for different individuals. Stressors: those physical, social, or mental demands/situations/events that evoke stress by forcing the individual to respond and adapt. Characterized by surprise/anxiety arising from a stressor. The autonomic nervous system (ans) activates: part of central nervous system, regulates body function such as heart rate, respiration glandular functions, comprised of the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. Hypothalamus stimulates adrenal glands to release epinephrine (aka adrenaline) Epinephrine : higher heart rate, greater blood volume, faster and deeper respiration, greater muscular strength, better visual and auditory acuity. Hypothalamus stimulates pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotrophic hormone (acth), which triggers release of cortisol.
