HLSC 1F90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Body Composition, Physical Fitness, Bone Density
Document Summary
Physical activity: any body movements carried out by the skeletal muscles, resulting in substantial increase in energy expenditure. Exercise: planned, structured, repetitive bodily movement done to improve or maintain components of physical activity. Exercise is physical activity, but physical activity is more than exercise. Improved heart functioning, healthier arteries, reduced risk of heart disease, improved sexual functioning. Efficiently generate energy from food, regulate hormones, protect cells from free radical damage and inflammation. Body composition includes higher proportion of fat-free mass and smaller proportion of fat. High cholesterol: endurance exercise has a positive effect on the balance of hdl and ldl. Hypertension: daily endurance exercise can produce good results. Coronary heart disease: exercise directly interferes with disease processes that cause coronary artery blockage; enhances the function of cells lining the arteries. Stroke: regular exercise can reduce the risk of stroke. Exercise may reduce the risk of some cancers. Exercise protects against the loss of bone density and strength.
