Theories of health behaviour change: health behaviour change is most likely to occur when people want to change and are in an environment that supports change. To help people be healthier, we must direct our attention to helping them change their behaviour. Focus just on a person"s behavior ignores important determinants of health outside the indicial. Focusing just on a person"s behavior blames the victim for his/her own poor health. Today, we recognize health is influenced by factors outside the individual. Health occurs within the context of multiple levels of influence. Behaviour influences and is influenced by social environment. Based on this understanding of health, it is clear that health promotion can/must occur on multiple levels. Health promotion interventions are aimed at encouraging individuals and communities to make healthier choices, and typically involve: Establishing rules, policies and laws; and altering physical, social, political environments.
