Dunning school: lincoln and johnson had a painless plan for national reconciliation after the civil war but they were thwarted by carpetbaggers, scalawags, and former slaves unfit to exercise political power. This became the dominant version of reconstruction across the us. Redeemers- white southerners who formed patriotic groups such as the kkk to restore decency to the south. Experiment in interracial democracy that brought good to the south such as schooling. Argued that lincoln did not have a plan and johnson was stupid and racist. Blacks not handed freedom but were active agent. For generations american"s in both north and south learned the traditionalist version. Take everyone who voted in a given state in 1860, if 10% of them declared loyalty to the us than the state would be allowed to go ahead and establish a new government.
