How social life plays out in diferent places: everyday people interact with diferent spaces and people, interacion with family, friends, strangers all in diferent places. Social categories (e. g. age, sex, race: relaionships change in diferent spaces. We are organized into social categories = social hierarchy: what we can accomplish in life depends on our social hierarchy, constantly scanning the places we are in and looking at the people in the environment. Social geography: a concern with the ways in which social relaions, social ideniies and social inequaliies are produced in their spaial variaion and the role of space in construcing them. 1980 and 1990: consituion of social categories themselves. Who we are supposed to be is not natural or biologically based . Available social categories: act your gender, act your class structure. But what we are not (relaional & binaries)
