Quebec"s rural settlement patterns are influence by river transport. Long lots are long thin farms that were built along the st. lawrence river: farms had access to the river for transportation. Farmhouses were close together and the villages were linear in shape. Road (& rail) patterns influenced the settlement pattern in ontario. Ontario is settled after the survey system is in place. The west was surveyed before any major settlement occurred. A section system" was a fast and efficient way to settle the west. Agriculture is a science and a business directed at the cultivation of crops and the raising of livestock for sustenance and profit: hunting & gathering, subsistence agriculture, commercial agriculture. There was a wide-scale transition of human cultures from a lifestyle of hunting and. It was the key development that gave rise to a sedentary human civilization. Farming replaces hunting and gathering as the basis for subsistence gathering to one of agriculture and settlement.
