Engl 1f95 literature in english: forms, themes, approaches. 2800 year old story: never from penelope"s perspective. Why not: rewriting the story involves changing the meaning of the story. Margaret atwood has done something remarkable with the penelopiad. She retells the iconic epic of the odyssey from the perspective of the female characters. Because this story has been told and retold literally thousands of times, and this is the very first time in 2800 years that attention has been extended to the women in the story. It"s kind of an astonishing accomplishment when you put it into that context - almost 3000 years of telling and retelling the story, and she brings something radically original in her version! That"s an important question about the nature of patriarchy, which insists that men"s experiences are more important than women"s experiences. Margaret atwood picks up on and develops a theme in the original homer version that we looked at a few classes ago.
