English 1f91: the prioress, the order of the pilgrims. The nun is sexualized through the descriptions offered of her by the narrator. She is describes with a fine nose, grey eyes, with soft and red lips. She speaks french, with an english accent. Wears a golden brooch that says amor vincit omnia (love conquers all) Such descriptions cause tensions to the reader. Nuns vowed to take a life of poverty, discipline, and chastity. But the prioress is describe as neither of these things, she sounds more like a medieval romantic heroine. Medieval society was made up of three estates. The estate of the church nuns, parsons, etc. The estate of the commoners everyone else who didn"t fit into the other two estates. The opening prologue of the canterbury tales . In each of the estates there also a moral order. Those higher in the hierarchy should be more moral.
