But the prioress is describe as neither of these things, she sounds more like a medieval romantic heroine. Medieval society was made up of three estates. The estate of the church nuns, parsons, etc. The estate of the commoners everyone else who didn"t fit into the other two estates. The opening prologue of the canterbury tales . In each of the estates there also a moral order. Those higher in the hierarchy should be more moral.
