Romance: post norman conquest, there are rhyming couplets; which are a french thing, german is alliteration. It is more of less in its original form. This poem survived in just 3 manuscripts. The genre of sir orfeo is a laye. Most are about love; the speaker knows the source of layes; this one is. But he does not mean the britain we know of he means the french folk from. Orfeo is about separation and return; sir orfeo"s wife is taken from him and then returned; he gives up his kingship and then gets it back in the end. This can also be seen in sir gawain and the green knight; sir gawain is separated from his court (arthur"s) and then returns in the end. The gods mentioned are referred to as fairies; as supernatural figures; powerful beings. Sir orfeo has amazing harping skills this is part of classical sources.
