Key terms for this week: nation, state, nationalism, banal nationalism, cancon. What is our national identity: canada as we imagine it to be, how we construct it through the stories we tell. Very socialized because we learn to desire certain things but it seems natural to desire things. Can be created in two ways: mandated or encouraged. We talk a lot about national identity but it"s a mystery how national identity comes to be. Most people are convinced that national identity, collective ideas that differ from other cultures. Canadians believe that it"s a good idea to have one, so that you can be grounded in something that has meaning. Is there any such thing as canadian culture : we learn our canadian identity; it is not inherited. Certain groups circulate different symbols long enough that we come to associate and identify ourselves with these meanings. How do we come to know our national identity? (regulation or cultivation)
