CLAS 3P25 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Thoricus, Architrave, Heroon
Document Summary
Temple of apollo epidourious the helper bassae, peloponnese. 430-390 bc starts at the beginning of the peloponnesian war and finished much later: architect, iktinos! Also the architect of the parthenon: aligned n-s = unusual usually east-west probably because of apollos myth cycle having him travelling north when he"s not in delphi, his trajectory takes him in a north south alignment. Plan: 6x15 doric hexastyle: 38 x15m: deeper porches to better see interior metopes, no exterior sculpture; but frieze runs inside cella. Special east entrance to adyton= sacred room: deepened the porch area. The columns are engaged into spurns extended beyond the wall. Fluid movement to these ionic columns- none of them have survived in great shape but there is enough of it for us to reconstruct. The floor is really dipped down in the cella, the water is eroding it and brining it lower. 1st use of corinthian order; for a single column.
