Sigmund freud 1856-1939: very influential idea; the subconscious mind. Carl jung 1875-1961: a student of freud; they disagree with how myth worked. Freud: myths tell you something about the human mind and yourself. Jung: myths help build up the human mind individually and collectively. Sigmund freud is very aristotelian and jung is platonic. Animus (man) anima (woman) they are building blocks of individual subconsciousness. Structuralism: myths are based on the structure of the human mind, blends the social and the psychological. Claude levi-strauss: 1908-2006: bipolar opposites: the basis of how people think (eg. raw vs. cooked) Joseph campbell:1904-1987: combines structuralist and jungian approaches, myths as a guide for the journey through life. They tell us much about the people who create them: hopes, fears, desires. What it means to be human: strong emotional impact, but are they right? (especially when they talk about things which no one knows for certain. Hesiod- 700 bc: theogonia (descent of the gods)
