SUFFIXES TO LEARN
1. –itis, ‘inflammation of, inflammatory disease of’
APPENDIC- appendix + -ITIS
ARTHR- joint + -ITIS
TONSILL- tonsil + -ITIS
2. –oma, usually ‘tumor arising in or composed of’; occasionally, ‘swelling
containing’; rarely, ‘diseased condition,’ ‘result of’ (related to –MA, ‘result
of’)
*Typically this suffix is attached to a base denoting body tissue. CARCINOMA,
however comes perhaps surprisingly, from crab.
Some common terms employing –OMA
Melanoma = MELAN- black, dark
Osteoma = OSTE- bone
Hematoma = HEMAT- blood
Trachoma = TRACH(Y) rough
* When –OMA is followed by another suffix it becomes –OMAT, such as
CARCINOMATOUS
3. –osis, ‘diseased condition of’; sometimes, ‘act of, process of,’ like –SIS of
which this is a form
Psychosis = PSYCH- mind
Tuberculosis = TUBERCUL- nodule
Hypnosis = HYPN- sleep
-otic = adjectival form of the suffix

adenoid = like a gland; growth of lymphoid tissue in throat
lymphadenitis = inflammation of lymph gland ectadenia –

angiitis- inflammation of blood or lymph vessel

cardiologist = a heart specialist
electrocardiogram= EKG
pericardium = membranous sac surrounding heart

encephalograph = instrument for measuring brain waves

mesocephalic = a head with a medium ratio of length to breadth
cephalopod = class of molluscs that have tentacles around the front of the head
6. CHOL(E) – ‘bile’, ‘gall’ cholangitis
– inflammation of bile ducts cholelith –
gallstone
cholagogue – an agent that induces the flow of bile
choleric – prone to anger (bile theory and an abundance of yellow bile)
7. CHONDR- ‘cartilage’
hypochondriac = from the notion that melancholy came from under the cartilage
of the breastbone.
chondrocyte = cartilage cell
synchondrosis = a joint where connection is made by plate of cartilage
8. CYAN- ‘dark blue’
cyanophil = an affinity for blue dye
anthocyanin = pigment found in flowers and plants
cyanide = a derivative of cyanogen, involved in process of making dark-blue
dye
9. CYT- ‘ cell’
cytology = branch of biology dealing with the nature of cells
hemocytozoan = parasite living in blood corpuscles
anisocytosis = inequality in size of red blood cells
10. ENTER- ‘intestine’
dysentery = disease of intestines
archenteron = primitive digestive tract of embryo
exenterate = to surgically remove bowels from
