Greece in the first half of 4th century: struggles for power & dominance between, all of this emerges from the peloponnesian war, athens, sparta, thebes, rise of macedonia. Tyranny of the 30 in athens in 404 bc) 4th c. bc in hellas: on and off fighting between leading city-states: sparta, athens, corinth & Thebes: alliances & counter-alliances with each other = confusing, sparta had even interfered with her own allies imposed garrisons even in thebes, interferes with political workings of thebes and impose a more spartan. Hellas & warfare: why: it was the common practice , homer = trained a warrior society, war brought short-term economic & political advantages not long term, psychological reasons for war, patriotism strengthened polis identity, us vs. Them = dehumanizing & hatred of enemy = willingness to kill/enslave. Amid war art still flourishes : great art and architecture still created sculpture more dynamic.
