Theories of development foundations for practice: focus on 4 areas of child development, cognitive, language, social, emotional. Interactions and activities in educational programs grow out of specific developmental and learning theories. Nature - nurture: maturation, multiple intelligences, psychodynamic, cognitive, humanist, socio-cultural, ecological, behaviourist. What is the focus for today: cognitive theory -- piaget and bruner, socio-cultural theory -- vygotsky"s theory of language development. Examples: a- banging is a favourite scheme used by babies to explore their world, b- assimilation occurs when they incorporate new object into the scheme, c- accommodation occurs when the new object doesn"t fit the existing scheme. Sensorimotor (0-2 years: use of imitation, memory, and thought, recognition that objects continue to exist even if hidden, move from reflex actions to goal- directed activity. Preoperational (2-7 years: development of language and thinking in symbolic forms, development of thinking operations through logically in one direction, difficulty seeing another"s point of view.
