Chys 2p51: introduction to qualitative research methods in child and youth studies. A method of fieldwork: interviewing, po, document collecting, filming, recording. The way we give and receive information. The way we dress, cars we drive, the music we like. All people have a capacity to classify experiences, encode meanings symbolically (language) Manifest meaning one that is surface and apparent. Latent meaning one that is suggestive, connotative, and sub-textual. Deep play: notes on a balinese cockfight. Geertz shows how the balinese cockfight serves as a cultural text which embodies, at least a portion of, what the real meaning of being balinese is. Thick description: explain behavior with as much detail as possible. Human actions can mean many different things. Become familiar with the people being studied. Start at the library: look for referrals, look for argot (specialized language) Think of it as an actor learning a role. Narrative accounts of what goes on in the lives of study subjects.
