Document Summary

Week 9 - complicating ability/disability: critical question. How can we conceptualize children and youth outside the ability/disability paradigm: accommodations in university. Accommodations are supports that are put in place to assist persons with disabilities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. In no way do they change the level of difficulty of the material or the skill being measured or assessed. A teacher in the elementary/secondary school system can decide on and implement accommodations for students on his/her own. In university, accommodations need to go through the student development center: accommodations in university. Otherwise i am measuring processing speed as opposed to finding out how much the student truly knows about the theory. I must make sure i am measuring what i am intending to measure: accommodations in university. Modifications, on the other hand, actually change the level of difficulty of the curriculum and/or the skills the student is required to demonstrate.
