The big picture: children"s lives shaped by global contexts: No social safety net = rise in street youth. 1 in 5 children still live in poverty (1. 3m) 550 000 in ontario: hardest hit children: How we think of poverty in canada. No safety net: basic needs denied, war, refugees. Lost boys of sudan: civil war 1983-2005: Un convention on the rights of the child (crc: global rights treaty (1989): 191 nations ratified (not us or somalia) What are children"s rights: rights of protection: abuse/neglect, rights of provision: health care/living/education, rights of participation: Children are winning rights _______________; but this is not yet translated into real, meaningful and sustained ___________________in terms of children"s. Criticism: does not address underlying inequalities, does not incorporate children"s voices, western model of childhood. Cycle of global poverty: globalization fosters inequality.
