Performing girl and boy: gender, belonging, and popularity. To be male is to not be female and vice versa. To be masculine is to not be feminine and vice versa. Eradicate characteristics that would have people mistake you as the other gender. Taught how to engage with people of the same sex and opposite sex. Young people create boarders between boys and girls parents and teachers do it. Binary (2 opposing forces that are not at all alike) is heavily policed and bounded. School, sports men and women never on the same team, funding for sports teams, psychology, media, peer groups, family. We become gendered, just as we are racialized. Gendering babies before born, or at birth is incredibly strong. American girl, darth vader, barbie, lego, dinosaur trucks. Toys r us pink side for girls (dolls etc. ), red/blue side for boys (active, outdoor stuff) Girl chores cleaning inside the house (dishes, vacuuming)
