Document Summary

Recap: from individuals to population to community (many species together interacting together) to ecosystem (communities interacting with abiotic factors) to landscape. Landscape elements: visually distinctive patches in an ecosystem. Patchwork of different types of land cover = mosaic. Landscape ecology is the study of relationships between spatial pattern and ecological processes over a range of scales it is highly interdisciplinary (ecology, stats, modeling, Gps, humans etc) examining patch size and shape tells us about communities and ecosystems. Landscape patches: vary considerably in size and shape it will be determined by variations in geology, topography, soils, and climate. The area, shape, and orientation of the landscape patches influence: habitat suitability, wind flow, dispersal of seeds, and movement of animals. Inherent edges: stable yet dynamic and are permanent. Induced edges: subject to successional changes over time. Fig 18. 3: a) think of a corn and potato field, they would not be mixed at all: 2 patches of forest will demonstrate this.
