BIOL 2P93 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Bryophyte, Cytosol, Germination
Document Summary
Thalli = bodies not differ into roots/stems/leaves + thin to uptake water + co2. Upper surfaces bryophyte gametophytes adapt + allow inc co2 permeability + reducing water loss. Doesn"t have stems/leaves + main body is flat, = thallus which forms dominant gametophyte generation. ] Bryophytes anchored to substrate/soil by rhizoids (simple hair-like extensions swell from lower epidermal cells). Water absorbs + inorganic ions directly by gametophyte, mosses: special hairs on leaves + stems help water transport. Bryophytes symbiotic relationships w/ fungi/cyanobacteria = uptake of minerals/nutrients. (pic above) Note: bryophytic rhizoids purpose = point of attachment to soil/substrate. Bryophytic tissue interconnect by cell junctions (plasmodesmata), similar to vlp: have internal component (desmotubule) narrow tube of er = transport material btwn adjacent tissue cells + desmotubule entrapped in cell plates during cytokinesis. Desmotubule in plasmodesma on right (arrows) continuous w/ er in cytosol. ] fragmentation: small pieces of tissue make entire.
