Document Summary

Bio society dec 12th 5-7, dec 13th 1-3 pm. Humans have long been interested in the transmission of hereditary traits. Humans began domesticating animals ~14,000 years ago: e. g. dogs, cats, cattle, pigs, horses, selective breeding for desirable traits. Artificial selection has similarly been important in the development of crop plants. ~400 bc hippo(cid:272)rates suggested that (cid:862)seeds(cid:863) were produ(cid:272)ed (cid:271)y all parts of the (cid:271)ody & were collected & transmitted to offspring at the time of conception: darwin proposed similar theory in 1868 = pangenesis. In early 1800s, lamarck hypothesized that behaviour could modify traits, and modified traits would be inherited by offspring. It was widely believed that hereditary traits blended together, with blended traits passed to the next generation = blending inheritance: both parents give genes to offspring. Particulate inheritance was proposed in 1860s by gregor mendel: determinants of hereditary traits are transmitted intact from one generation to the next, no mixing, separate area.
