Include lipids and macromolecules (carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids) Anything that includes carbon organic things contain carbon in living organisms. Origin: carbon containing molecules are originally discovered in organisms. Vitalism: belief that organic molecules were imparted with a vital life force and could not be synthesized vital life force is the only way to make things, not scientifically. Friedrich wohler (1828) synthesized urea without use of kidneys. Biochemistry was born with this simple mistake. 4 valence electrons in outer shell, can combine to 4 diff things. Has ability to form four covalent bonds. Normally bonds with c, h, o, n, s. Can make vast number of compounds; very complex. May occur in linear, ring-like, or highly branched configurations. Offers diversity in terms of shape and structure of molecules. These molecular shapes can produce molecules with a variety of functions.
