Document Summary

Proteins that receive neurotransmitters are known as neurotransmitter receptors. 1921; otto loewi: first showed experimentally using the vagus nerve of the frog heart. This is when they realized that nerves send messages by releasing chemicals as well, rather than just electricity. He stimulated the vagus nerve to one heart, decreasing the heartbeat. He then transferred the fluid surrounding that heart to another heart, decreasing its heartbeat too. It was hypothesized that if chemicals were involved in synaptic transmission, the chemicals in the fluid that spilled from the heart would have the same impact on another heart. Sir henry dale identified one of the chemicals as acetylcholine. Action potential in presynaptic cell releases chemical message. This message can either excite or inhibit the postsynaptic cell. Ex: synapses can be excitatory or inhibitory. Excitatory connection: action potentials in presynaptic cell produce action potentials in postsynaptic cell (or increased firing rate)
