BIOL 1F25 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Basal Lamina, Plasmin, Mercantilism

75 views2 pages

Document Summary

Cancerous cells produce proteinases and plasminogen activators to allow the ells to pass through the basal lamina. This results in invasion of other tissues including that of blood vessels. Transport to other sites permits the formation of secondary (metastatic) tumours. Sporadic cancers - those with no increased risk passed onto future generations. Look into familial history to subsequent generations, to observe whether trait has been passed on through generations. Some traits that were proposed to have a genetic basis were based upon pedigrees. Higher chance of occurrence of the characteristic in a family when compared to the whole population. This does not prove that there is a genetic basis for the characteristic. Higher chance can be explained by environmental influences (physical or sociological environmental), or by observer prejudice. If a single pedigree is insufficient to determine whether there is a genetic basis, look at more pedigrees. We must look for association with other traits.
