Document Summary
Emotions developed because of their adaptive value (promotes survival) Emotions are innate (the primary ones) and the associated facial expressions are innate as well. Stimulus has the potential to illicit the emotion. Experience of the emotion will cause a bodily reaction (ex. Stand-up comedian, leads to amusement, leads to laughter) Sequence of events is very different than most people would think. James-lange theory: one of the oldest theories of emotion, suggests that it is the autonomic response that causes emotion. ex. Stand-up comedian, you would be laughing (bodily reaction), and you would be amused because you are laughing. In other words, it is the bodily reaction that would illicit the emotion. Problem: it is possible to be physiologically aroused without feeling any emotion. At a work-out will have a similar autonomic response as you would during fear (increased heart-rate, etc. ) Similar patterns of arousal should cause similar emotions, but this is not the case.
