GEOL 1033 Lecture 4: GEOL 1033 – 01/24/17
Document Summary
Up until a few years ago we could not reach the bottom of the ocean it was james cameron and his funding that did so. We can determine the shape of the sea floor from submersibles, ocean drilling, and bathymetry. The earliest series of soundings (a weight on a cable, measure the amount of cable that goes underwater) was the hms challenger, 492 bottom soundings. Co(cid:374)fir(cid:373)ed matthe(cid:449) maury"s dis(cid:272)o(cid:448)ery of the mid-atlantic ridge. Circa 1905 puller sounding machines were put in use, however it was the same idea, just a mechanism to make it easier. Posidonius (~85 b. c) first bathymetric studies mediterranean. Used 2km of rope with stone tied to end. Emitting low frequency sounds that penetrate bottom sediments and rock layers, the sound reflects off the boundaries between the layers, and a receiver picks up the reflected sounds, which are analyzed. This technology started circa wwii with the asdic 144q echosounder. Started in wwii to detect mines and submarines.
