Ecology: from greek oikos = household, a study of our biotic and abiotic home, primitives: first humans needed to be studying ecology from day one. Natural cycles, plant uses (food, medicine, clothing,), animal behaviour: aristotle and pliny: formality, medieval beastiaries collections of animals in small location, experimentalists include pasteur and darwin application in experiments in biology dates back to these guys. Ecological generalities: everything (!!) interacts, directly or indirectly, everything has an effect (breathing, atvs on the beach), although degrees of response vary, linkages through ecological hierarchy, emergent properties. The ecological hierarchy: ecosphere first level, biosphere, biome, ecosystem, community, species, population. Individual: biogeographic region, not same as common parlance.
