Document Summary

The study of the effects of drugs on the function of living systems: chemical substances of known structure including paracetamol, caffeine, heroin. The effects of most drugs are a result of the interaction between drug and components of the organism. Fate of a drug: absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, what the body does to a drug. Study and measurement of drug effects: what a drug does to the body. Most drugs cause their effects via receptors : different cell types express different types and densities of receptors. Drugs can mimic or block the actions of endogenous substances : agonists and antagonists are each ligands and bind to the receptor, agonists mimic the actions of endogenous ligands, antagonists block the actions of endogenous ligands. Cardiac cell: high densities of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, respond to substances that act on muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, e. g. acetylcholine, vascular smooth muscle cell, high densities of -adrenoceptors, respond to substances that act on - adrenoceptors, e. g. noradrenaline.
