The determinants of health: identify and define the concepts, underlying causes and impact of the determinants of health in individuals and populations. There is no biological or genetic reason for these alarming differences in health and life opportunity (36 life expectancy year gap between countries) Unequal distribution of health- result of a toxic combination of poor social policies and programmes, unfair economic arrangements and bad politics. Circumstances in which people grow, live, work and age, and the systems put in place to deal with illness. Conditions in which people live and die are in turn shaped by political, social, economic, cultural and environmental forces. Social conditions in which people are born, live and work- single most important determinant of good health or ill health: social determinants can be seen as causes of the causes - foundational determinants which influence other health determinants. Miasma or humours: spiritual or mechanical forces, miasma- bad air. Germ theory of disease: cholera, tuberculosis, septicaemia.
